Planning a winter getaway to Switzerland and unsure which places to visit? I planned the perfect 3-day road trip that includes staying at two of my favourite Airbnb’s in Switzerland.

First stop: Gstaad!

We began our road trip from Zurich. It took us approximately two and a half hours to get there by car. This picturesque village is exactly what one imagines when planning a trip to Switzerland. Surrounded by breath-taking mountains, Gstaad is a beautiful town in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps that you should definitely visit in the winter months.

Wonder around the walkways or take a romantic horse-carriage ride to explore what Gstaad has to offer. If you are lucky, you will see the town covered in a magical blanket of snow.

Do not forget to enter the bakeries of Gstaad and to keep yourself warm make sure you add a cup of hot chocolate to your pastry.

Just a twelve-minute walk away you will find every photographers dream: the Art installation Mirage Gstaad. A must visit and surely one of the major highlights of our stay. Created by the American artist Doug Aitken, this incredible mirror house is open 24 hours and free to visit!

Where to stay:

We decided to stay at an Alpine Lodge in Zweisimme , which was roughly a twenty-minute drive away from Gstaad. The Alpine Lodge is a beautiful and very cosy lodge on top of the Rinderberg mountain. You will have to park your car at a dedicated parking space and take a cable car ride up to the lodge. Once you get there, charming members of staff will greet and assist you with your luggage and lead you to a very cosy room with lovely interior design. To our pleasant surprise, we noticed that the lodge was perfectly connected to a surrounding ski area.

On top of that, it is also a perfect place for a relaxing wellness treatment – which I have to say was one of the best I have been to this far. Unfortunately, I was not able to capture the whirlpool due to other guests being present but you can have a look on their website and on my Instagram stories if you are eager to see how it looks like.

Second stop:

Valais!

After a wonderful stay at the Rinderberg Alpine lodge we drove to Valais also called Wallis in German. The drive took about two hours and twenty minutes. Valais is known for its vineyards and exceptional wine. You will find several shops selling local wine. Therefore, if you happen to be a wine lover, make sure to take a bottle or two with you.

In Valais, I discovered one of the most amazing Airbnb’s in Switzerland. This Airbnb is located in a small yet very charming village called Orsières. The view is outstanding and this rental will surely guarantee to make your stay worthwhile. The size of the window left people wondering if it is a painting or the actual view – and let me tell you: It is the actual view! If you are planning your trip in a group, keep in mind that the chalet can be booked for up to six guests.

Do make sure to buy some groceries before your stay, as there are no supermarkets close by.

Third stop:

Zermatt!

The last stop on our trip had to be Zermatt. Known for the famous pyramid-shaped Matterhorn mountain and upscale alpine resorts.

How to get there:

The resort in which we stayed in was not accessible by car. Hence, we drove to Täsch, which took us approximately one hour and forty minutes. When you arrive, you’ll find parking spaces directly at the train station. If you do not want to get your ticket at the counter, you can purchase them beforehand on sbb.com . Zermatt is a very pleasant town with lots of shops, restaurants and little boutiques. If you wish to know more about the Matterhorn mountain, see to it that you visit the Matterhorn museum.

Unlike Orsières you don’t need to carry any goodies from the supermarket with you as there are lots of places to try some tasty dishes. Apart from good restaurants, Zermatt also offers numerous ski slopes and hiking trails. You can even go sledding or take the scenic Glacier Express train. Do not worry if you don’t have any skiing gear, you do not need to purchase them just for your visit to Switzerland. Simply rent them at numerous shops in town. However, do make sure to have well equipped winter gear, especially snow boots if you are planning your trip around January- February.

Where to stay:

Hotels in Zermatt are very pricey. Therefore, we decided to stay at an Airbnb. Unfortunately, it was very cloudy on the day we arrived but if you are lucky enough to have clear skies in winter or even to come here during the summer season the view will fascinate you. In choosing where to stay, I strongly believe that the view speaks for itself. So check out the link I provided below.
